Biography

David C. Murphy is an award-winning director and filmmaker from Glasgow, Scotland, recognised as Best Scottish Director at The HB Film Festival in 2024.

He graduated from the University of the West of Scotland in 2014, winning Best Factual Film at the year-end awards show. He then turned his attention to fiction filmmaking. He started with the short film Dames!, a period comedy/drama that examined gender roles in the film industry. Dames! became an official selection at the Florida Movie Festival. Next, he directed J. Costello, which was praised for its caring and tender depiction of living with dementia. He also directed Living Arrangement, which won 4 awards at the Flicks Film Festival.

Left: A Dating App Love Story was his first film as a writer/director; the short had a very successful film festival run, including screenings and award nominations at the Scottish Short Film Festival, Unrestricted View Film Festival, and Edinburgh Fringe. The film received awards and nominations for Best Edit, Best Creative or Original Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, as well as winning CafĂ© Flicker’s The Big Flick after securing the audience vote at both monthly and year-end events.

David’s filmography continued with the intense drama/thriller short Bait, starring John McQuiston (The Nest) and Ronan Doyle (The Witcher: Blood Origin). He was awarded Best Scottish Director at The HB Film Festival for this work.

His most recent project is Pact, a psychological drama about the fragility of external motivations, covering themes of consent, body image, and self-empowerment.

David has also directed theatre and owns a videography company.
